GARDEN AT HIGHGROVE

Prince Charles' wild flower gardens at Highbury - I drew a design based on the drawing straight onto a piece of calico with black Indian ink and, with the coloured drawing beside the sewing machine I 'painted with zigzag stitch on the calico.

IRIS 1

Free machining on appliquéd silk background (based on sketchbook studies). This was inspired by some wonderful, old fashioned irises growing in our garden. I spent sometime drawing them, one at a time, stuck in milk bottles. Then I hand dyed three pieces of satin in order to cut the shapes of the irises out in sections of colour that were appropriate (as near as possible) to the colours of the flowers.

IRIS 2

Some of the drawings I made of the irises for the previous picture were done in pencil crayon and the swirling lines gave me an idea for a machine embroidery using straight stitch and 'drawing' with coloured stitch lines.

PADDED CORN

The influence for this came from an Egyptian bas-relief of wheat and the Van Gogh painting of a corn field. Designed on washed calico, machined & hand embroidered. I drew the design onto a piece of washed calico and tacked it onto wadding. I then machined in between all the shapes, starting with dark green and working through to the sky colours - this left the corn head shapes in relief. I then hand embroidered little flowery shapes and used gold threads with macrame knotted heads on for the wheat 'beards'. It's much more colourful than in the photograph.

THREE FISH

This embroidery was based on a fragment of Tiffany Glass I saw in a book. I made the drawings of fish and put together the design to have as much movement and colour in a confined space as I could. It is entirely hand done satin stitch and I worked on it on trains and planes for months - I like to have a piece of hand embroidery for journeys.

This was bought by my optician who thought £250 was a scandalous amount of money for a picture - but we think his specs are expensive too!!

STRING SPLASH

Following on from the autumn string thing, I got a bit hooked on whipped string and wondered if I could get something watery-looking. This is based on those Hockney 'splash paintings', all turquoise swimming pool blue with shifting shapes. I mono printed a piece of white silk - dropping the relevant colours onto a piece of glass swirling them about a bit and then whapping them onto the base material. I quilted the base in swirls, partly to give a firm foundation and partly to create texture, the effect of which is totally covered up by the application of the whipped string.

ACETATE RAINBOW WINDOW

“a sheet of acetate with a rectangle cut from the centre and machine stitching across the “space” created by the rectangle – giving a cobwebby collection of stitches and in the process distorting the sheet of acetate.  This is suspended within a space of whipped dowels held together with whipped parcel string.  Can be free standing or wall hung.”
